There are contradictory notions of what blackrom is within the comic. (ugh I hate myself why am I even talking about this)

Supposedly it's based on hate. But it's more about rivalry. E.G., Dualscar and Mindfang. This was the prevailing notion when we read ancestor smut Mindfang's journal. Note that Mindfang doesn't want to kill Dualscar; she looks fondly upon their relationship even though it's blackrom (at least before Dualscar kills Mindfang's slave).

But apparently it can just be based on hate and being really hot for each other. E.G., Spades Slick and Snowman. But carapaces aren't trolls! Well, fuck you, Scratch said it was blackrom between Slick and Snowman.

But then it can just be based on hate. E.G., Terezi and Gamzee. Terezi just hates Gamzee; they're not rivals or competitors, she's just absolutely disgusted with him and somehow this is cause for attraction.

Never mind all the platonic hate that trolls can have for each other that just utterly confuses the issue.

Point being, troll romance was a poorly defined concept when it was first introduced and has not improved since then.
