Interesting, but it can't be that simple: the troll's Black Queen refused to wear the ring because of the frog aspects it would give her.  That seems to contradict Jack being able to turn the tentacles on or off, but extra limbs could be a special case.  (I can't remember if he ever turned the tentacles off before becoming Bec, so maybe it's a function of the space powers)

I agree that it could be because Jaspers was already dead, a cat, or not a first guardian.  Mainly the third theory (my own cat is very affectionate, though I understand that dogs more clearly represent loyalty).

Tavros and Vriska, matesprites? I don't see it. It's probably more that they're the only two people in the bubble. And Vriska's giving Tavros orders and he's getting Stockholm syndrome. Well, that's probably pretty much equivalent to love in troll society. Anyway, it doesn't matter because now John's showed up and he's going to ruin everything between them. Probably give that ring to Vriska or something.
