He is the voice of a particular slice of a particular generation.  He is the expression of cynical self-importance and justifiable rage we all carry deep inside.  Every time you're standing in a slow moving line, or troubleshooting an idiot-proof program, or watching somebody struggle to perform a task you could ace blindfolded, Karkat is that voice threatening to break out the back of your skull, urging you to shout at the top of your lungs, "WHY ARE YOU SO TERRIBLE AT THIS? EVEN I'M NOT THIS INCOMPETENT."
