Spades Slick was in kismesiship kismesissitude with Snowman, so they've been in troll romance for quite some time now.  According to the wiki Jack and BQ had the same relationship.

I'm pretty sure that Alternia had already been through Sburb at least once before the trolls existed.  I think that the troll race descended from the carapaces.  It fits well with the grey skin and the quadrants.

I'm pretty sure that the universe just has some shitty parts that it just mixes together to make all the species. ("lets add HARD SKIN and GODDAMN HORNS to this one!" "Oh let's also make it absurdly hard for them to reproduce!" "Oh great idea!")
