If the internet is her imagination, then we are all located in an asylum or some such place.
In conjunction to that, since we exist in the real world and in her imagination, then we only exist because of her imagination. She indirectly built the asylum she's locked in.
She might not know it consciously, but it's stored somewhere in her mind. This is supported by the fact that she replies, or even reads, threads here. I doubt she would reply to this thread if she knew that she created us (she would remember it in some way, and if she did, she would already have an idea of exactly what we would write), since that's comparable to solving a puzzle you made and therefore know the answers to.
Maybe the people she made existed long before she did. Maybe it's a paradoxical sort of existence-- sorta like, "you wouldn't exist without your parents but they wouldn't exist without you", but there's nothing involving time shenanigans, just some sort of equilibrium with the creation of existence.
And see how I'm explaining this here? This is exemplary of her creating us and not knowing she knows the stuff I'm writing.

...With the right writing skills, that actually sounds like it'd make for a nice book.

I'm going to assume you're talking about yourself, because I'm a guy. No offense taken though :P I've always liked the idea that whole worlds could spring out of one's imagination though. It is an idea well worth exploring :D

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With that silliness and persona swiping out of the way, ignoring the partially joking nature of the concerns expressed, I don't really see what the issue is with the idea of making fan characters. It's ultimately not much different than other creative exercises, and the setting practically encourages it with the understanding there numerous sessions with numerous entities playing it, and numerous alternate timelines on top of that.

But I don't want to read or know or learn anything about somebody's self-insert character into the HS universe.

That's my issue with it.

Strictly speaking, a fan character is not a self-insert by nature. And, strictly speaking, you wouldn't (ideally) be forced to read it by any real stretch of the imagination. Now, if your issue is having it somewhere where it is effectively being shoved in your face (here, for instance, and completely out in the open in a way that takes up a great deal of space), that's something I can understand. But if it's their existence in general that is supposedly a problem, that's something slightly different that I don't quite agree with.

Just to be perfectly clear on that.

Actually, it was a combination of me confusing your username with Vector's and me going back to this post to do some gender-related research because of the apparent absence of one in your profile. Otherwise, it would have had lots of he/she and him/her and his/her(s) scattered about it. Or a bunch of "they"s.
And thank you, it's nice to know that my usually senseless ramblings have the potential to be understood and appreciated by other people. :1J

As for Whoops, pressed send instead of post. FFF I meant to say "post instead of preview". Jesus I wonder how many times I've used the word post today.

Thanks for reminding me of that, I need to fix it. And you don't have to hide your face, I think it's awesome :P

You can do that with lucid dreams.  Spend the time before you fall asleep crafting a world and then if you're focused enough on it when you fall asleep you'll go in there in your dream, which will hopefully be lucid.  I've heard of some ludicrously complex and internally consistent dream worlds.

Mine almost worked once, I imagined the continent and stuff and then went straight into a dream where I was in an airship over the area I had been imagining, but it was all developed now with farmland and stuff.  I lost it though.

That's really cool idea too; someone spends time crafting a world, but when they visit it in their dreams, they find it subtly changed each time. Maybe their world starts to take a turn for the worse with mutated people, eldritch horrors and whatnot, when they realize they can't escape :U

Wait, are you saying you don't agree with creating fantrolls or disagree with the idea that they're a problem simply because they exist.

Also, on the side topic of dreams and stuff.  I remember the only lucid dream I had and it sucked.  Though perhaps there's a subtle difference between realizing I suddenly have psychic powers and realizing it's a dream.

I disagree with the idea that their very existence is a problem. I do agree that it would be problematic if someone were to take their fantrolls and randomly start shoving them into the thread in a highly visible and hard to ignore manner, and would understand someone having an issue with that and similar behaviors.

That kind of thing is why I should be more careful when I'm rewriting while I prepare a post. Edited, hopefully clearer now.

Strictly speaking, a fan character is not a self-insert by nature. [...] But it's their existence in general a problem, that's something slightly different that I don't quite agree with.
For me, it has to do with the implications to outside observers that I possibly have fan characters in other fandoms The issue goes a little further than "AM might have fan characterS". It's more like,
"AM might have multiple fan characters" --> "AM has fan characters in different fandoms" --> this hypothetical person who happens think about things more overly analytically than I do may think "other fandoms aren't as loose with their concept of existence, so AM is comfortably with essentially self-inserting herself in stories", which I am actually very uncomfortable with.
But that's just me being obsessive about what the implications of things I do may lead others to think. Not that it's a very influential factor in things I choose to say here, though. It's just one of the several different ways I think about stuff.
I disagree with the idea that their very existence is a problem.
For more clarity on the stuff I wrote above, this quote is one that I agree with. I don't mind others having fan characters that are in other fandoms with strict boundaries set on what their canon universe is and is not (for lack of better words), but I somehow feel hesitant to have that apply to me.

On lucid dreams, I don't have dreams that often (disregarding this thing I once read that claimed that you dream every night but don't always remember your dreams (though I don't know if there's a way to monitor whether or not one is dreaming, since I don't know if REM sleep necessitates dreams, or how they would even know that (okay, enough about the technicalities of sleeping))), so trying to have one would probably be like buying a chance to get a lottery ticket. It's an attempt to do something sealed within a risk to be able to attempt it, and the risk is that I won't be able to sleep because when my sleepin' meds kick in I can only tell if I'm tired if-- aaand I think I'm starting to be hard to understand now so I'll stop.

See all this text? This is the result of me getting ninja'd mulitple times with posts that aren't topic-changing when I'm still thinking of stuff to type. Not that any of you guys could have known I was typing anything, I'm just holding back less of my thoughts and their consequential elaborations than usual.

I just like messing around with various typing quirks. I don't see the appeal of fantrolls, and I dislike having them shoved in my face when I'm browsing fanart threads on the MSPA forums and stuff. I don't like many crossovers either. I guess I just prefer Vanilla!Homestuck.

I think the appeal is similar to the appeal of customizable characters in video games or online avatars.
I'm okay with having a fantroll, but not for any purpose other than just to go through the process of creating it.
Figuratively speaking, my hypothetical fantroll is that shirt you made by hand but never have and don't have any specific intentions of wearing. All it ever does is exist, though it doesn't take up space or get in the way of anything. Every year that passes, it becomes less and less of what you consider to be your style, deterring you from using it even more.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, my fan character is a carefully crafted yet not particularly remarkable article of clothing.

Hmm. I'd never thought of it like that. I guess I can see the appeal of making one just to make one more than making one just to have one. Thanks! :D
