I honestly do not know why those pictures bother me so much, but every time I see them, I want to throttle somebody through the Internet.  Is it a reference I don't get?  Is it the raw flamboyance?  If it's none of those things, why the candy?  What does the candy mean?

Nope.  It's from F-Art thread II, back when sprite edits were popular, and the first piece of fanart to get put into the comic itself.
