I'm guessing that this is when the blackout happens. Rose just asked the orb whether the Horrorterrors are evil and then it went rogue, I suppose.

He's didn't say that on his formspring, but he did on the MSPA forums. So, yeah, don't look at it too closely.

Are any of you familiar with the works of John Lovecraft, which spawned the term "Lovecraftian horror?"

Lovecraft often would craft beasts (like Cthulu) and ideas who instilled horror in their subjects not through action, but through comprehension. For instance, a color that even imagining it would cause a person's mind to unravel.

Rose may have just been told the truth of the Horrorterrors, and it is too much for her to comprehend.

That's my interpretation; either that or the horrorterrors who were granting her vision have just pulled the plug.

Hm... That sounds like a good interpretation, I like it, although it bodes badly for rose (far worse then her just going blind).

John Lovecraft, who was Gordon Lovecraft's brother, was one day in an non Euclidian Space.  He got an email from his brother that said aliens and gods and alien gods were attacking his brain.

As for the flash-that-wasn't-a-complete-flash (grumble music grumble), I think it's more like the classic case that anything you say or ask the "gods" is a direct pipeline to their vision-shattering power.  As was said, it was the same sort of sequence Jade experienced, and when Karkat first conked out, he woke up with the same reaction she did.  Maybe this is just how everyone experiences direct contact with the Outside for the first time?

Also you guys don't remember nothin'.  All that gibberish in the ball was the same gibberish from Rose's old book, and her poster.

I like the theory that Rose asked the cueball if the Horrorterrors were evil.  This is of course basically a subjective question, so instead of producing a specific answer, it provides you with all the information you'd need to make the decision for yourself (since this provides the most accurate answer).  Unfortunately, this would basically consist of flash-downloading complete knowledge of the Horrorterrors into her mind, which really wouldn't be good for anyone's sanity given the Lovecraftian nature of the Horrorterrors.
