We only know that trolls can't mostly don't bother to contact kids from doomed timelines. We don't know if doomed trolls can contact the kids or not.

Terezi gave Dave strict instructions to follow before she 'flips' the coin. Depending on the result, Dave does the following.

Doomed Dave: Once he sees the result, he travels back in time and sleeps on the Quest Bed.
Alpha Dave: Once he sees the result, he travels forward and does a bunch of stuff, then comes back to the Quest Bed.

Dave seeing and processing the result and what he's supposed to do is what splits the timeline. Up until that point, they're both still Alpha Dave in the Alpha timeline.

See? It all makes sense.
