I've theorized this for a while now.

In a franchise in which the author makes a point of perusing fan created work for ideas on where to take the story himself, I imagine it'll be something like that.

John isn't stupid, he's just a quirky goofball and main protagonist.  The cool-headed leader.

He is indeed very quirky and a goofball, but he's certainly not the brightest either. Of course, in the words of Rose, that's why he's the perfect leader. Seriously, I'm thinking it's genetics at work here. Dave and Rose become these jaded, sarcastic nuts, and John and (apparently) Jade just go further off the deep end than they already were. Considering the pairs are related, no way it's coincidental.

Except it hasn't even been 24 hours for John. Since Jade gets in last, she probably has less than 12 hours to do what she needs to do.

I don't know if we have ever seen how close Jade is to the rift on the timeline when she enters the medium.
