Re: Jade and the puppet - I think her not reading into the phallic subtext of licking the puppet schnoz (while Dave does), is both entirely in character to Jade, and in being an incredibly flighty, childish 13 year old girl.  What does she know?

I didn't even notice.  I choose to believe it's just a really weird perspective.  Otherwise, it would just be bizarre.

A five-gender species, eh? Lessee... male and female versions of both drone and gestating (drag) queen, along with neuter workers? That'd do it. Or maybe a egg-producing queen (1), with eggs hatching into little skittering things that in turn lay eggs to other animals (2), with those eggs then hatching out of the animal in question and growing into a (probably) genderless worker-soldier (3); Ellen Ripley being (4) and that freakish white thing as (5).

Trolls have four, by the way, if we also count the IMPERIAL DRONE. Assuming that male and female trolls actually have any physical difference. The adult trolls in Karkat's movie posters would suggest it, but with the heavy stylization and mutations going on, it's hard to say. It could be that only male-female pairs are capable of combining their genetic material, or that they have vestigial gender and any pairing will work, or that gender is just a psychological thing, male and female trolls being completely identical under their subtly different facial features and hairstyles.

Also, I think I'm maybe thinking about this too much. I can't help it. Xenobiology is just so exciting.

I go with the last option: male and female trolls are physically identical
