Shippers don't just go with pairings, actually... there's the phenomenon known as OT3, where the shippers go for a menage-a-trois.  A particularly interesting example is in the anime One Piece, where the habit of "Merry-Shipping" has become popular.  The entire crew of the main boat is shipped with itself.

Hmm. Just most commonly then. I've not been exposed to enough fandoms to see that happen.

I'm just tired of stories in which "Who will X choose?" does not have answers of 'both' [in simple situations] considered.

Oh yeah, Boxcars. I was wowed because Droog is Spades' starscream, so it was weird. Apparently, it now makes more sense.
