I just figured it out.  Gamzee is Troll Buddha.  Born to the highest station in a world of assholes, all he cares about is being chill making people happy.  That's pretty awesome.

It's almost frightening just how well these things are coming together, isn't it?  Maybe it's just forced pattern recognition, but everybody seems to first dislike, then grow firmly attached to their sign-troll.
