Actually Armok knows what he's talking about this time. The physics are confusing, counter-intuitive, and weird, but anything that can send messages at faster-than-light could also send them back in time. Of course, it could only send the messages to one particular time, based on the distance traveled and how much faster than light it is, so what the trolls are doing would take ridiculously complex math to do. It's also one of the reasons faster-than-light communication is supposed to be impossible. The explanation probably revolves around skaia though, not theoretical physics.

Armok is saying it's sufficiently advanced technology but not explaining how this technology works, which is basically the same thing as saying 'it's magic'.
