It's kind of hard to figure out what in the author insert scenes is canon.
I think we were just told, in fact, that none of what's happening now is canon.

But the fact that this relationship had to be made canon means it must not have been canon already from being in a canon scene. This means everything in the current sub-plot is non-canon unless specified otherwise.

It's canon in that it's actually happening, at least from Slick to Paint.
Paint to Slick is still unsure.
