I am now wondering what ^cake files are, and what is in them.

They're carrot cake files (^ is called a carrot). It's nothing but a pun.

But I think if the ~ath file is suddenly plot important, the ^cake files will be eventually as well.

Eventually?  John's already had several episodes of complaining about being ass-deep in cake.  As soon as he reconnects with Nannasprite and there's a computer around, expect caretcake to have it's moment of glory.

If you aren't creeped out by Lil' Cal, consider this:
Cal was given to baby!Dave by John, and later given a new outfit by bro. Cal then proceeded to inspire nightmares in Dave, causing Dream Cal to manifest in his dream bedroom. When Rose threw Dream Cal out, he rocket boarded over to the veil laboratory, where john gave him to baby!Dave, making Dream Cal the real Cal. Cal is is a nightmare inspired by itself.
