Honestly, the Alchemy always reminds me of Monster Rancher. 23 base monsters, and then something on the order of 300 odd possible combinations between base monsters and assorted items.

Obviously, the possibility set would have to be limited to a certain number of item classes, but I think it would be doable without too much difficulty. Especially since a number of items in that possibility set would be "junk" items, and not every item would combine in meaningful ways, and a lot of the combinations seem superficial at best. And come on - people made Scribblenauts. This would totally be doable.

Well yea, most of the changes are either
1. Superficial (Such as changing the colour of a suit from black to green)
2. Adding functionality (Such as turning normal shades into IShades and allowing you to use them as a computer)
or 3. In the sense of a game, increasing a numeric value, such as base damage.

A system with a list of items that is, although preferably large, ultimately finite, that is that augmented with a tagging system would be ideal.
