So... what is so great about the recipe modus? I mean, it gives the recipe to make... something you already have. Were it a normal modus, you could just use the code on the back to make as many as you like, without the need to hunt down any ingredients for alchemy.

Ah, but you can get combinations that are cheaper to build. Like the hat for instance. If it was created using the second formula, then you could find out the first one which is noticeably cheaper, and recreate it at a discount.

But... don't you need to codes to punch cards at all?

This modus completely removes the possibility of combining ANYTHING without assistance if so.

The shittiest modus.

Gotta ask a friend who has a different modus for help then. Or something.

So until the time player gets his shit together and messages you a bunch of codes that he will have to spend time looking up later, or you rope one of your friends to visit you (Which will take a long time, troll/kid sessions are presumably non-standard.) and help you with your crap for who knows how long, possibly ruining something due to modus shennannigans, you're completely screwed equipment-wise.

Just like a real person.  Instead what it does is show you how to reverse engineer stuff you haven't seen, without having to go through an extensive trial and error process.  Provided you know anything about hexidecimal encoding.  Jane didn't mention anything about programming, even shitty programming.

Or maybe you use said second modus yourself. After all, sylladexes are all about impractical inventories.

It tells you which other items are needed to alchemize something. If used with a more normal modus, it could be used to make subtracting objects from an item, like what John did with his Ghost Dad poster, or what Sollux did with the rocket pack, easier and involve less guesswork. So, it has it's uses. Though you can only really use it practically with another modus. On it's own, it's crap. Good thing John and Jade have modii to spare.

It might just be coincidence, since something with small horns and grey skin could be generalized as a troll.
