I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

dwarves will attempt to clean cosmetic layers, that is, face, beard, hair, outer skin.

ive said this before, i eagerly await the modding accident that causes a dwarf to interpret its internal organs as a cosmetic layer. possibly when a dwarf tries to clean a wounded dwarf who has a goblin pike stuck right through him. imagine the nurse dwarf stripping his patients skin back to scrub that evey last centimetre of abdominal cavity in complete disregard to anything else. and when the family comes to visit they are greeted by a gleaming skeleton and neatly displayed and very clean internal organs.

...That gave me an idea.  We need funerary practices in this game, like mummification or the like, to prevent those corpses you put in coffins from rotting.  Yes, it means you can't use the bones, but it's better for the dead that way. :P

We need that, if only so there can be more Fun when Necromancy is put in. I yearn for the day when one of my dwarves decides to SHOW THEM ALL and sneaks into the crypt to raise the fallen.

I wonder if nobles should return as some kind of fire-based undead?

I just keep on wondering how much hell all the detail will wreak on our FPS.

I think the hardest layer in the attacking part is used, at the moment.  Overwise your fist would break with every punch...
