Also, I just really don't like WoW or anything relating to it.
WoW contains polygons and allows you to do things by pushing buttons. Uh oh.
Yeah, now you're getting it. Mentioning world of warcraft (or worse, Call of Duty 4) around the "Indie Game" crowd is an absolute death sentence. Abandon all hope, ye who talk about popular video games here.
I did perhaps take primary offense at how the suggestion was worded.
"You should make it like World of Warcraft."
Hold on, let's look at this...
"
You should..."
What I "should" is do whatever is assigned to me by professors at school or bosses at work to ensure good grades and a steady paycheck. You
should keep in mind that Toady makes DF because he wants to, Baboonanza makes Visual Fortress because he wants to, and people like Grey Hunter and I make models for Visual Fortress because we want to, and we don't have to answer to you. Keep in mind that when I was making suggestions to Grey Hunter, I didn't tell him that he "should" do anything, because frankly, he's offering to let us use the models he made for GlodStory, which is already very generous. The worst I said was "Try doing this," which while it technically has the same meaning, represents in a different way. I also offered to donate my own time helping work on his models, but I didn't say that he "should" let everyone have his models. He has anyway, and I at least appreciate that a lot.
You "should" also keep in mind that when you tell someone that they "should" or "must," that you are exerting authority over them, and if that authority hasn't already been established, for example in a forum where we're all strangers and volunteers, then they're going to take offense at it and push back, because frankly, who are you to tell anyone that they "should" do anything?
