Visual Fortress: another 3D visualisation app
« on: July 29, 2009, 07:42:53 am »

This is my attempt at a 3D visualisation app. It's focused on displaying mega-projects and landscapes accurately and hopefully beautifully. Basically like 3Dwarf, but more advanced.

It supports all 40d# versions. Windows only, though a linux version may follow.
If you have performance issues check VisualFortress.ini and disable anti-aliasing first.

Get it here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1272

This is a screenshot of my last mega project, the Unfillable Dam:

It's constructed entirely out of blocks (many thousands) and houses the whole fortress. For scale, the face on in the picture is 14 levels high.

This is Inquisitor Saturn's Boatveiled fortress, it menaces with stripes of Microline:

This looks fantastic, definitely the most visually pleasing visualizer yet.

Hot damn! This is amazing. How does it compare featurewise to 3dwarf?

It loads maps faster, runs faster, looks prettier and accurately shows material colours. It has the slice tool from 3Dwarf, I don't know of any other features since I was never able to get 3Dwarf to run.

I think we can conclude this is the best visualizer yet.

I think we can officially state that Baboonanza is awesome.

EDIT: Doesnt work for me. Its a problem with opengl, but I get that from a lot of games.

Your graphics card probably doesn't support pixel shaders. This crappy comp i'm in doesn't, i'll switch to my laptop and try again.

This is bloody impressive. My hat goes off to you. Works a treat on my system without even a hint of lag on a 6x6 with 86 z-levels. You may just have given me enough reason to actually dive in and *play* dwarf fortress again (been holding out for the next release).

TLDR: Thanks a tonne.

How many colours exactly? Does it have the full set?

Also does it handle ramps in the same way as 3dwarf? My previous megaprojects had a lot of rounded slopes and curved surfaces. Ramps tended to look jaggy on them because they couldn't conform.

Look at all those wonderful microcline clusters in that cross-section view! :P

I'll have to give it a spin on Abbeyverse later today - we shall see if it does gem windows yet ^.^

It'll also be a good stress test, since Abbeyverse has some real worst case geometric complexity with the exploratory mining tunnels.

Whoa! I'd have to agree, it will make visualization of megaprojects much easier (whether showing off or using it to assist construction) and now that we have the color stuff available, we can see things in full color!

Neat looking dam there btw.
