good to see that someone is looking at making sure this gets revived. I hadn't realized how much I used and enjoyed having a 3d visualizer.

just wondering, will the fast aproching 40d# merge make it easier on those working on this or harder?

Neither, as the largest hurdle is in how the map data is stored.

Is it possible to get in touch with the Stonesense team and get the neccessary data from them?

Well, you're probably free to ask them, but if my understanding is correct they used DFHack.

Imagine a combination of power goals 44 and 45: The ruler convenes a council of the nobles to appoint you the high priest of the nearby towns. Instead of waiting for them to finish their drinking session, you walk in and crush a goblet while berating their disgusting behaviour and general incompetence.

yes, we did indeed use DFhack, and would recommend that you use it too, since that way, when a new version comes out, things only need to get updated once.

At least the memory hacking stuff. I can't make any promises on dfhack API stability. Still, it is better to have an unstable API than just a binary blob to hack I think :)

and there isn't a version of VF for 2010 yet? Damn! I used to love using this for 40d. In fact, i still do, because I prefer 40d at the moment (much less in terms of the bugs).

And wouldn't the 40d merge that toady is dealing with at the moment eliminate the whole map data storage problem? Or is that me being TOO hopeful?

No, the 40d merge is to do with graphics and input. The map storage may or not change in the next version, but the 40d merge is not relevant.

I have to agree. This is the tool I have used the most for DF ever.

Would gladly donate a bit to originator or whoever gets it going again - or alternatively a new tool if that's deemed easier. I like Stonesense and isometric is fine, just not for DF, for me.

You're like the third person to ask.  Most recent (aka top of this page):

Actually while baboonaza is too busy to bother with the project right now, he didn't vanish. I managed to send an e-mail some time ago to him (I beleive it's in the readme) and got a reply.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

He said he'd given up the project, but whoever wanted to take it on could go right ahead as it's open source. The gist of it was posted quite a few pages ago now. Hence, we need a new champion of non-isometric 3D :P

As such the engine could even use a dwarves appearance modifiers to create the individual dwarves from a base-model XD. But this would be a project for itself.

It's great to hear some people are trying to pick this up again!  I can't wait to see when someone figures it all out and we can get a new version.
