I can program but I have no idea at all about DF memory hacking/reading.
This. The big problem atm isn't so much the actual code as the integration of the new way the data is stored/used/whatever in DF.

If anybody can do the memory hacking, I might be able to invest a little time to improve interface, new creatures, etc.  Still, I strongly suggest waiting for the merge.

I don't see any files there. Is this true for everyone, or just me?

Looking at the project feed allows me to find http://visualfortress.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/visualfortress/, and of that, it looks like ProcessPeek/ is the folder holding the code Baboonanza uses for the memory hacking.  I'm not certain, though - confirmation would be appreciated.

I'll poke at it again after the merge, but I make no promises; I suspect this is beyond the scope of my abilities.

I got r49 compiled last night. It mostly works, but if anyone wants to work on getting it to read DF2010, r12 or r20 are probably better starting points.

EDIT] After playing with it a bit more and getting the textures to load the right way up, r49 is looking more attractive. But it still needs a fair bit of work before it looks good with shaders on, and its broken with shaders off. Is there an OpenGL guru in the house?

Actually I wonder if we could export the genarated file to a common 3d data file (ie, .obj, .3ds, etc) and import it to a proper 3d program. I'd love to try rendering my fort on a real software renderer like 3dsmax, would make some fancy shots.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

If we could get file output working, that would be amazing. Hell, do some resizing and you would have yourself some fun FPS maps to play on.

If there were, you'd see them in the thread. Sadly, nobody with serious programming know-how seems to have taken up the mantle. We can only hope someone starts up a new non-isometric visualizer for the new version from scratch.

I recently got some textbooks on OpenGl (i have some experience with C++, Assembler etc. but didnt get around to learn OGL) and associated stuff so i can give it a look - i dont take any mantle thought.

The problem is to work yourself into a not (or not well) documented program. That said i take a look anyway but dont expect results anytime soon.

OpenGL is just half the problem, and might not be a problem at all if you work from an older revision of the program - the latest version appears to be half way towards the next version. The new features are nice, I got the frustum culling fixed, the shadowmaps are extremely broken, and nothing I've played with so far even touches the real issue - getting map data from DF2010 rather than 40d, probably via DFhack.
