Of course, Gearholes can't even begin to match up to the majesty of Undergrotto, but it does get more interesting all the time.

I'd say that's actually very big, enough to put your whole fortress in at least three times (unless you have a very large fortress)

Wow, Dorten, castle is one of the coolest designs I've seen in a good while. Great job! :)

Oh, I was actually just looking at your castle on the DFMA Dorten :P Very nice! And it's actually got a very castle-y layout! It'll be nice to see when the walls are nice and built up.

Can you change out material textures?

Given that Dorten's castle is made of steel, it would be cool to find a more suitable texture to make it look nice and shiney.

Sort of.  You can replace the image file its currently using for steel, but every other material that references that file will also change, IIRC.  That is, which file is being called is hard coded, but as SkyRender has improved VF he's added more materials.

I don't think the visualizer handles reflection though... so "shiny" would be rather dull.

I could be (hope I'm) wrong though.

You are correct, it does not handle reflections.

Even something with false shine being added in the actual texture would be nice, though; like this for example.

Having a steel palace myself I wouldn't mind going to the trouble of having two copies of VF with a different texture set each to take screenshots of metal things and stone things separately.

Incidentally, since the problem I was having was with Home Premium versions of various Windows systems, would anyone know a trick that isn't getting a second OS or virtual computer that could let me use VF again? I can access it on a friend's computer but it's kind of bothersome and awkward for me to ask.

Windows 7 Home Premium

I think this might be the issue.  I remember seeing something about VF not liking the "Home Premium" versions of Vista and Windows 7.
I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. Works fine.

It supports all 40d# versions.

Visual Fortress doesn't seem to be able to import a memory dump from df_28_181_40d17_win... Can I run a save from df_28_181_40d17_win in df_28_181_40d16_win? I'll try.

Edit: Yay, it works.

Unreleased as far as I know.  He was working on it, then disappeared.

Though, feel free to add textures to the
Visualizer Textures Project

Stage 1 of my big megaproject is complete.

This is Empireslabor (a pretentious name, but I tend to re-randomize my fort names until I find one I like, and I did like this one).  It is cast from one continuous block of obsidian.  It currently spans four z-levels vertically, and most of my embark location horizontally.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Empireslabor is inspired by some of the classical descriptions of Atlantis.  Following this, Stage 2 will be to drop the whole thing into the ocean, so I thought I'd post pictures while there was still something to see.
