Cooling is what magma does. I like the realistic depiction in the above entry hall.

The problem is that DF magma never cools right now, unless touched by water, or if we consider evaporation of 1/7 squares to be cooling.

If it's possible to differentiate, the bright one should be used for magma with the cooling one used for lava.

This may be jumping the gun, but a while back I ran a 3D dwarf fortress on the Something Awful forums, - Glodsaga - and I still have all my max files from that. (the only time DF has crashed to an unrecoverable file for me, goddamit.)

Which means I have a model for most of the different workshops, here's an example, the carpenters shop - its 4600 polys, down to 3800 if you take out the sawdust. the only problem is its not properly textured, - all the different colours are different objects with a separate texture applied.



No sure if they would be of any use to you or not, but I thought I could offer the files if you can use them.

I suggest that the table model be made wider, such that groups of tables form a single cohesive surface.

Nice model, but imo that's way too many polys for viewing a large fort which will invariably have a lot of workshops.

Could be scaled down considerably by using planes and cheating detail by using textures instead of actual geometry.

Yeah there is way too much geometry imho.
With 1/10 of these polys and a good texturing it can look almost the same. The differences will be noticeable only if you zoom VERY close. But if you zoom that close most things will look bad, so it is not a problem anyway.

and the model I made was sized specifically for that, but he scaled it down. :(

The whole thing is a work in progress, so... yea. Not to mention there is the wierd terrain warping that I showed a page or so ago.

Does anybody know what the diffuse slider is supposed to do? I tried messing with that one and it didn't seem to do anything.

Gah!  There's already been a new OpenGL version, and once again, it doesn't work.

Luckily, it seems (to me at least) that they might have messed something up with the performance of 40d15, so I probably won't be using it.

Moving on:  I've combined the two magma textures (Literally), producing two different looks.

This one I find too pale and sickly, I may need to color-correct it a bit, but it makes the effect of cooling starting.


This one looks practically like Balrog skin, and makes an interesting effect in that it looks like the crust is cooling, certainly, but it's hot as hell regardless.  Almost looks like fire through thick smoke.

The first one looks somewhat more like alien skin with veins running through it, or something otherwise organic.
