Installing the latest drivers fixed it!
Updated my posts hehe :)

Now I am gonna have lots of fun!

Edit:
I must say this application is as awesome as I expected, great work Baboonanza!! :)

I have noticed that if I set USE_SHADERS to NO in the .ini file then some objects become semi-transparent, mostly constructed walls and smoothed floors, although smoothed natural walls seems ok.
Look at the bottom screenshot:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It may not be a bug, with shaders enabled everything is ok.

I say, a beautiful and efficient visualizer! Congratulations!
Two questions:
would it be possible to make the ceiling thickness somewhat higher as an option?
Is it possible to increase the movement speed?

I just did a driver update check and it says that I have the latest software for it. I have NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. I'll look around in the device manager and see if there is anything else that could use an update.

Edit: There isn't anything else that I could find which would be relevant. Maybe it's something related to Vista?

Edit2: Here is the log:

* C:\DFVisualFortress v0.8\VisualFortress v8\VisualFortress.exe 28.08.2009 07:24:18, user: Joshua

Anti-aliasing: 16xQ (Quality) CSAA
Shaders enabled
Vertical sync disabled
Anisotropic filtering level 16
Loading vertex shader 'Default.vert'
Loading fragment shader 'MatGlossBlend.frag'
Loading vertex shader 'Billboard.vert'
Loading fragment shader 'Billboard.frag'
Loading vertex shader 'Sky.vert'
Loading fragment shader 'Sky.frag'
Loading fragment shader 'AlphaDiscard.frag'
Loading fragment shader 'Default.frag'
Loading vertex shader 'DepthOnly.vert'
Loading fragment shader 'DepthOnly.frag'

On second thought, the extended file path could be tripping it up, so I'll try shortening it a bit.

Is it possible to increase the movement speed?

Faster than holding shift and moving you mean?

Fixing the file path didn't help. Here is the windows error log:

Faulting application VisualFortress.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4a9702a7, faulting module VisualFortress.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4a9702a7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00015300, process id 0xf70, application start time 0x01ca27e523581e89.

It's exactly the same with all the errors I got except for the process id and the app start time. I don't know whether this means anything to you, but whatever helps I guess.

I have noticed some minor problems with stairs:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

These are up-down stairs carved into natural rock, there is unmined rock below them but it looks like they go into empty space. There is also some texture strangeness on the vertical side of the floors above.
PS. I used "reveal hidden tiles" while dumping from DF.

I think that's been there for a while.

Anyways, can anybody help me with this wierd crash issue?

Edit: I just tried it without any DF window, the 40D14 and the base 40D version and it still crashed. So, somethings wrong with my system???

I would suggest first setting SHADOWS=NO in the .ini file, since the next bit after the end of the log file is to do with shadow initialisation. After that try turning off shaders and anti-aliasing.

Also running it from the command line using 'VisualFortress.exe debug' might give you some more info in the .log file, but no guarantees. Other than that I'm out of ideas.

I have noticed that if I set USE_SHADERS to NO in the .ini file then some objects become semi-transparent, mostly constructed walls and smoothed floors, although smoothed natural walls seems ok.

This one is particularly annoying since I couldn't get glass to render transparently without shaders on my machine! I'm beginning to see why game developers bitch about coding for the PC, grrrr.

I tried it with the settings you mentioned on no and it still crashed. So, I have no idea what the hell is going on. There is something different between the previous version and this one that causes it to crash.

EDIT: I think the debug revealed the issue!

* C:\DFVisualFortress v8\VisualFortress.exe debug.exe 28.08.2009 11:17:53, user: Joshua

No .ini file found, using default settings
Anti-aliasing: 16xQ (Quality) CSAA

Loading vertex shader 'Default.vert'
Loading fragment shader 'MatGlossBlend.frag'

You mentioned an .ini file, but there isn't one, just a CFG file!...Or um, not sure.... arrg! What the heck is going on with this????............

Couple odd little bugs.

Arrowslits look odd when facing east or west.  As I gather you already know.

And Constructions made of green glass blocks look opaque when looked at straight on from the south...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
but transparent when viewed from any other angle or direction.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Don't know which was what you intended.  It might be a bit difficult to notice if you don't try to look at a construction from every angle, but it's there.

And just because
Just looking at that picture brings a tear to my eye and says "Everything bad that ever happened isn't quite so bad..."

Oh and the artifact green glass throne way off in the back of that last pic, does not exhibit the same opaque from the south behavior as the walls do.  It's puzzling.

This is an awesome visualiser though.  Isn't this the first one to actually render bridges and tables and stuff?

EDIT: Oh and statues in the middle of a room are facing north instead of south.

I just did a driver update check and it says that I have the latest software for it.
maaaaaybe that software you used to check is incorrect. I wouldnt just blindly trust it, anyway.
What version of the driver are you running?

Right now, as I type, the newest version is 186.81
for vista: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_186.81_whql.html

Also, just a blind guess:
Anti-aliasing: 16xQ (Quality) CSAA
Anisotropic filtering level 16
That sounds pretty demanding. I'd try to turn that down in the .ini

I'll try the debug thing....

Edit: How exactly do I do the debug thing? I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.

I don't know if I said it earlier, but it's crashing without even loading the preload screen, you know, with the reveal hidden tiles checkbox.

Sorry for the wall of text, but anyways, when I disable shading, I get this:

* C:\VisualFortress v0.8\VisualFortress v8\VisualFortress.exe 28.08.2009 12:49:32, user: Joshua

Shaders disabled
Vertical sync disabled
Anisotropic filtering level 16

There is nothing else after this....

Hmm... wood has taken on a wierd bluish tone, and copper has gone reddish.

My airship no longer looks right.

Here's what I'm talking about:

EDIT: STILL CRASHING.......

This may sound like a dumb question, but have you tried just going to the menu instead of using the ctrl-R shortcut? I ask because I crash out every time when using ctrl-R but if I go to the menu everything is fine.

I'm also on Vista.

Any ideas what the heck is going on with it? The previous version goes to the preload screen (with the reveal hidden tiles box) just fine. Let me know if a DxDiag will help and I'll post it in a spoiler tag.
