Drafting Retired Adventurers in Fortress
« on: August 22, 2006, 01:25:00 pm »

I doubt I'm the only one who'd enjoy a noble who could create slay-quests or post guard-jobs for wandering (probably dwarven) adventurers.

I think it'd provide another level of integration between the two modes. Granted, by the time you could afford to hire your retired adventurer he'd probably not be exceptionally useful, but it'd be an interesting bit of bloat.

He he he.  It would be fun to run a reclaim with a bunch of old dwarven adventurers, although...  you'd be sentencing them all to death.

Adventurers are also sentenced to death...  they just have the option of stretching it out indefinitely.

Perhaps there could be a mirror option to this one, though, "send dwarf into the world," which turns one of the dwarves in your fortress into an adventurer?  One of the nobles could grant it. You could even send up to five companions or pets off with them.  Of course, this would probably have to wait until fortress skills become meaningful in adventurer mode...

It would probably also have to have some limitation to keep people from exploiting it to get rid of excess immigrants...  although giving it to a higher-ranking noble would probably work, since by the time the player gets one of those they probably aren't worried about immigrants as much anyway.  It could be limited to once per season or year or somesuch, too.

Some of my old adventurers wouldn't be so good for the moral of my fortress. One of my dwarfs uses the head of the late dwarf king(I didn't kill him) as a weapon.

A lot of things adventurers do aren't possible in fortress mode. No throwing, no trap components, no 50 shields at once, and no setting things on fire.

Maybe trade could work towards that function?

Like, you send a caravan with guards and traders to the Mountainhomes or to human towns; they pick up experience and bring back goods. That way sending dwarves out has a use.

There's been intermittent talk of sending soldiers out for battles/traders out for caravans,  but I think I've heard that Toady doesn't want that to be offscreen, so it'll have to wait until off-site rendering (i.e. leaving your fort alone a bit to manage the battle/trade) can be done.

That said, throwing your dwarves out as adventurers would be good, and being able to give miscellaneous jobs (or just food, shelter and a little trade) to passing adventurers would be great as well.
