Limbs in/atop fortifications.
« on: July 28, 2009, 11:21:18 pm »

So. The goblins arrived, just as the dwarven caravan did. And, as usual, the military was out to meet them.
Of course, there's a colossal mess, with severed limbs and blood EVERYWHERE, due to hammerers hammering goblins into walls at speed, and axedwarves hacking away. There are limbs in fortifications. There are limbs ON fortifications. There are limbs on top of the archery platform, on the other side of fortifications, that must have flown up a few Z-levels and along a bit to get down there.

Will limbs be pulled out of fortifications, or left to rot? And will I have to make stairs to pull them from the top to retrieve the bones?

You will need to deconstruct fortifications to get whatever is inside them.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Somehow I can imagine an angry marksdwarf lifting his leg and briskly kicking a rotting goblin arm and leg out of the fortification slit to take a few shots at invaders.

If the limbs are outside, you can just wait for the bones to wither away.

Indeed, but I want the bones for crafting.

haha, oh this reminds me of grand times and my first epicly large disorganized fortress. the first big fort that did not fail for some reason had several random entrances with big moats and towers and things. there were bits of goblin in the walltop fortifications every invasion.

also, seeing as i go to crazy lengths to clear stone, it aggrivates me how deconstructing an upper floor drops stone ito the fortifications the z level below. that probably needs fixing or something.

Most fights you will only have a few limbs stuck in/on fortifications, with the vast majority of them easily accessible.

It may just not be cost effective in terms of time and hauling tasks to do that. Just wait until the season change and the bones will vanish.

Carve your Fortifications from constructed walls and you won't get any nasty bits falling down in the fortification.  The wall still acts like a wall from above(you can walk on it) and you can still construct on top of it as well.

The difference between a built Fortification and one that is carved from a wall(constructed or otherwise) is like the difference between a Embrasure in a Battlment and an arrow slit in a wall, effectiveness not withstanding.

I don't think its on the season change. I think bones rotting have their own timer. My evidence being that I watched bones stored outside not disappear on the season change.

Nope, one of the limbs was stuck in a fortification that had been carved from a wall.

I say WAS, because I was forced to demolish them when the hole they were shielding did the opposite job to what it was MEANT to do. It was supposed to be an emergency vent for the kitchen complex to get rid of miasma, but the rotting goblin corpses caused the miasma to get in through the hole.

yeah, stuff gets stuck inside carved fortifications, although limbs have to enter them from the side. and deconstructing stuff above them can remove the floor somehow, it was a while back i last did this so my memory is fuzzy. however, the aggravation over dealing with lumps of stone getting stuck in each successive level of fortifications carved into a cliffside was quite immense and the bile still rises in my throat at its memory, even though it was months and months ago.
