Bears as war mounts.

I had a grizzly bear take care of a kobold ambush for me once. I'd expect they'd do just as well, if not better, against snatchers and thieves.

Ambushes and sieges will still probably take them out, however, though they'd probably fare better than war dogs would.

What does "warring" a dog do? I assume it boosts damage, but that bit is hardcoded so I can't see how much. Would war dogs beat an untrained bear in a fight? (I use modded war pigs because they're one size larger.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Turning a dog into a war dog doubles the damage it deals. Otherwise, no changes. I don't think a war dog could kill a grizzly bear, unless it got a lucky shot at its throat.

Bears definitely spot thieves. I once used one in a fort and he would routinely decorate my walls with pieces of kobald and goblin.

I wouldn't risk putting your breeding pair in danger though. Let them make a bunch of cubs and use war dogs until your bear population is sustainable.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that theives will be detected when any of your dwarves or tame animals touch or a share a tile with the sneaking thief.

I do believe that is true for ordinary thieves.  Master thieves have been known to sneak by guard animals, but tend to show up before they get out...and then they have to get by guard animals that can see them.

Since anything can spot a thief, your best bet is to catch the 3-4 fire imps in your magma pipe and place THEM in your highly fireproof main entrance.  Fun will be had...by both you and your enemies.

It also makes it brave, which is important.  Untrained animals won't fight

War bears. Best of both worlds.

I use war cougars myself, since I haven't found a second grizzly yet.

I'm fairly sure the animal doesn't even have to be tame. I've had a random goat spot a kobald before.

I remember goblin snatchers to be detected by goblins... Probably this was fixed, but I am not sure.

Add the [trAINABLE] tag to whatever you want, and you get to make war animals of that type.

I remember a goblin snatcher revealed by a GCS.

Oh god was that funny to watch.
