I'll admit that I found the Apocalyptica version quite jarring, and much prefer the classical version.

Plus, I'm not sure what the association between dwarves and electric guitar is. The bass-clef instruments and pipe organ have always seemed like much more dwarfy instruments to me.

It's because Dwarves are hardcore.

Also, Apocalyptica is cellos plus drums.
No guitars.

Maybe a bit too metal to justify, but I think it characterizes raiding a death-lined fort in Adventure Mode well.

Everyone knows it's impossible to get dwarves drunk. They instead substitute their arteries for beer cans, and their plasma for alcohol.

That's what DoomRL is for.
Man, I'd love to see DoomRL with DF-level violence.

And organs aren't hardcore?

The electric guitar complaint wasn't pointed at Apocalyptica, but it seems to come up with some frequency, like the doom music that was just posted, and this seemed like the place to mention it.

Organs are definitely hardcore.
But many of the instruments played alongside organs are not.
Another reason electric guitars pop up is because they're placed with other, more dwarfy instruments.
I want to see a band that has a fiddle, cello, organ, drums, and bass guitar.
That would be awesome.

There's a general consensus that a sober dwarf's judgment is clouded (or made unfashionably reasonable) like that of a drunk human.

Wow this band is awesome.

Sadly at some point they turn into elves...

that IS a rather elfy video, but the music is still damn dwarven. i went to the lyrics for that particular song, and when i listened to the part that wasnt in english, i realised that it sounds pretty much like what i would want dwarfs to sound like. twas beutiful.

Dwarven music should not use any instrument invented after 1400. Or was it 1500? Whichever. It still rules out anything electric. :P

I define dwarven as "a dwarf would like it" rather than "a dwarf could make it".

I define dwarven as "a dwarf would like it" rather than "a dwarf could make it".

This is a good definition.

Besides, DF is fantasy, which is often full of anachronisms and stuff.

Stop that. :P

On a more serious note, I'd relate most metal more to goblins and demons (and other 'evil' races). Do consider that the dwarves don't necessarily share the mindset of the players.
Personally, I'd link dwarves to the music of the Romantic era (around the 19th century). It was big, it was brassy, it conveyed the adventurous spirit of the time, and I think that suits our dwarves well.
