Ye gods, their 40k page is absurd.
I'm being nice and not linking to it.
I got there on one of my earlier visits...

Seeing as you're still alive I take it that you didn't read through the whole thing  :D

This is getting fantastically off topic isn't it.

See, I wonder if it would be possible to create cursed weapons in the future releases. Like, they would do awesome damage but have some nasty effects. Like one could slowly drive it's user insane. If we could follow the object through the histories that would be awesome. Just sort of watch as this evil object is handed down from one person to the next and eventually drives them to murder and madness. Perhaps some people, like priests, would even try to destroy it.

TV tropes is a labyrinth where the walls are constructed from snarkiness and useless but funny information.

Its like wikipedia but with fewer assholes.

Debatable. Wikipedia just started to purge "triva".

OH DEAR GOD. I was curious, and I'm now in the B section of the 40K tropes list.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

pretty much

Or like Gáe Bulg or Kusanagi or any other powerful magic weapon. There could be all sorts of fun things that fearful weapons could do. Like having to kill someone to make their powers activate. Or that while it's drawn you have a constant "bleeding" status. In otherwords, superpowerful weapons that could result in very bad things happening to both the victims and the user.

Gae Bolg was Cuchulainn's spear, right? That thing was nasty.

I was thinking about artifacts in the vein of the One Ring. They offer protection/power/dominion over creatures and stuff. Or it could an axe that can never be used to cleave anything except dwarves/humans/elves/goblins. Or a cursed crossbow bolt or arrow that returns to you everytime you fire it but will eventually kill you?

Either way artifacts with special powers like that could be entities of their own and have an entry in the legends screen, naming owners, people killed/dominated using it, and so on.

Mwhehe. A bolt that always hits twice. If you haven't got enough targets lined up then it comes at you...

Achilles sandal style... Damage reduction 20 to the body, -10 to the foot. Only in DF can you aim specifically at someone's feet...

This will all probably have to wait till magic is implemented, but once it is there will be a ton of possiblities. Like, for instance, say a wizard makes himself a ring that enhances his power. After his death/murder the ring is looted and passes into a group of theives. Now, lets say that along with the fear meter there was a greed and desire meter as well. Powerful, expencive or beautiful objects would cause people to want to have them, the higher the want the greater the lengths these people will go.

So the ring enters the band of theives, and of course each one wants it for himself. The implications could be, if everything was tracked, that the ring could cause the murders of those who wore it as well as striking fear into others because of it's cursed status.

Basically, if you get a powerful artifact then their will aways be the chance that someone will just attack you to try and get it.

I really want to mod in cool artifacts 'n' stuff.
I want a sword that can talk.
The talking will eventually drive the user insane.

Which means we need different types of insanity.
We already have stark raving mad, melancholy, and berserk.
A list I came up with:
Xenophobia - you will automatically attack outsiders.
Hoarding - you will automatically pick up certain objects and are unable to drop them.
Hallucinations - things will appear and you can attack them, but they never die and teammates won't attack them. You might even hallucinate and think one of your teammates is a cougar or something.
Twitchy - your muscles twitch. Mostly harmless, but a twitch of the elbow can send your sword into your face.

Well, bolts and arrows are already pretty 'magical' to begin with (here's hoping Toady fixes that  :D ).

This will all probably have to wait till magic is implemented, but once it is there will be a ton of possiblities. Like, for instance, say a wizard makes himself a ring that enhances his power. That would be great! Imagine an entire army of marauders coming to wrest Thatthilfer from your hands and failing miserably. Given the power some of these things have I can see civs going to war over them, dragons going on extended quests to hoard as many powerful artifacts as they can, and so on.

The odds would be so stacked that you'd need all the power at your disposal just to deal with them. Ten to one there'd be a bug that causes children to want it too, effectively causing your death by a thousand cuts.  ;D

Yeah, cursed stuff sounds cool.  You could get a quest from a town to destroy a cursed artifact by doing something special to it.  You could do this... or listen to the cursed artifact and murder everyone in the town, using its power to help you.  Your call.
