Got banned for making fun of hentai fans in an anime thread. 

He ignored repeated warnings to just not be mean to people.  I think after he jumped into a thread he hadn't posted in before just to call somebody a filthy attention whore I issued him an ultimatum.  He never showed any intention of listening, continued being mean to people, and so he was banned.  I'd rather have him gone than the great swaths of people he was trying to chase off, which seemed like almost everybody at one time or another.

Wow, he did have quite a history, even just looking at public warnings etc.  It's too bad when people who are otherwise good contributors can't or won't give up their nettitude.

But yeah, if you don't get rid of them then you end up with a shithole like the Data Realms forums.  They're another indie dev's forums, but they're full of hostility, especially toward newbies.  The community moderators frequently join in the flaming.  The dev doesn't seem to care, even though game mods posted in his forums are one of his main sources of income (you have to pay for the game to use mods).  He hardly interacts with the community at all.  It's a depressing place.

I think you did back when I first started playing, but maybe not.  Anyway, the point is that mods are largely what keeps people interested in supporting the game.

Yes, the key word here is "almost". For I hate them too. I just let them be the filt...ops.
