I think mandate making nobles should make speeches increasing the morale of dwarves, but if they die the dwarves will have unhappy thoughts possibly causing a tantrum spiral. They shouldn't demand admanate  or other hard to obtain things unless you have discovered a PLENTIFUL supply on your map. I think then people would stop killing them.

I really don't see why nobles would hold speeches randomly. Maybe after significant losses in a siege in some funeral ceremony but otherwise it seems forced

It's called brainwashing. you see the nobles secretley build mechinisms into the floors to turn dwarves into mindless zombies. In all trouth though it's propogandam and when the pope makes a speech noone booed him ;)

I want to pretend to be a really good Christian, work my way up to Pope, and then "reveal" loads of truths to make Christianity a decent religion and die as the most liberal Pope in existence. Until Pope Urist Mcliberal in 2034. Damn him.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
