(40d) DF won't start
« on: July 27, 2009, 04:05:42 pm »

I try running Dwarf Fortress but every time it asks if I want fullscreen or windowed and I select one it will say that Windows has encountered a problem and closes it out. Running on Windows XP service pack 2.

What are the specs of your system hardware?  Can you run other games that use OpenGL?

Yeah, your system should run it fine.  Where's the game installed on your hard drive?  You can try re-downloading a fresh copy of the game from http://bay12games.com/dwarves/ and installing (extracting/unzipping) it to a different location on your hard drive, in case the first download was corrupted or something.

I've done that I just redownloaded it to my desktop and extracted it to a folder on my desktop and it still comes up with the same problem.

Try updating your graphics drivers and verifying that you can run other OpenGL games.  Crashes after the windowed/fullscreen prompt can be caused by a problem initializing the graphics.

Y'all could try setting [WINDOWED:YES] in init.txt.  That helped for somebody recently.

itsa OGL error.
For all who "suffers" from that OpenGL 1.1 start-up problem

It turned out that the newer Catalysts point to the openGL32.dll in winxp system/system32 folder, while ATI's opengl driver is "atioglxx.dll" and in order to
use this ATI openGL you have to add the following key in the regedit to "correct" the link.

Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\ati2dvag]
"Dll"="atioglxx.dll"
"DriverVersion"=dword:00000001
"Flags"=dword:00000001
"Version"=dword:00000002

now it works fine :3
