The captain of the guard is a raving psychopath!
« on: July 27, 2009, 08:02:56 am »

In my screen dwarfs are dying left and right at first i thought it was sparring accidents or the occasional taking a kobold arrow to the kidneys. No by my neglect one dwarf was systematicly wiping out my military one by one after much investigating i finally caught him in the act of pummeling a marksdwarf by the central staircase into mush. HammerFist the Captain of the guard!

(The thoughts and preferences of a Serial Killer.)
'Hammerfist' Inethgongith  Ritholtastrod has been ecstatic lately. He talked with a friend lately. He made a friend recently. He slept without a proper room recently. He was able to rest and recuprate lately. He admired a fine bed lately. He was disguisted by a miasma lately. He beat somebody recently. He has witnessed death. He took joy in slaughter lately.
He is a faithful worshipper of Teshkad Diamondtraded the Wayward Way of Markets.
He is a citizen of the Seal of Tributes. He is a member of The Immortal Labors. He is the captain of the guard of The Immortal Labors.
'HammerFist' Inethgongith  Ritholtastrod likes Clay. Adamantine. Yellow grossular. coral. the color burnt sienna and crossbows. When possible. he prefers to consume Dwarven rum. He absolutely detests toads.
He is often nervious. He is quick to anger. He is confortable in social situations. He can handle stress. He is somewhat reserved. He is relaxed. He does not have a great aesthic sensitivity. He needs alcohol to get through the working day and can't even remember the last time he had some. He is a hardened individual.

Just promoted him as he is one of my first champions a master in both hammer&wrestling i gifted him that nickname along with adamantine gear. Was just about to assign him a noble bedroom i just got done engraving. Sonofa..  Hes unstoppable!

Mebzuth Asmelneth. Recruit has bled to death.
Vabok Osterush. Marksdwarf has been struck down.

Melbil Stuckoszon. Marksdwarf is throwing a tantrum!
Melbil Stuckoszon. Marksdwarf has been struck down.

Still kind of new to DF what can i do at this point? If i leave him he'll paint the fortress red with the innards of my best defenders. The other dwarfs are starting to become unruley with having their relatives pasted all over the halls too.

I think what you're witnessing is a tantrum spiral - one dwarf gets upset and throws a tantrum (destroying something or punching someone) and becomes a criminal, your Captain of the Guard delivers punishment (in this case, a beating) and kills the dwarf, then said dwarf's friends also get upset and throw their own tantrums.

Lather, rinse, repeat. Have fun. :)

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Rig up a jail really quickly so he stops beating criminals to death is probably the only answer.

If he's killed more than a few percent of the total population the spiral is probably so far reaching as to be unstoppable :/

Compared to the rest of my fortress military he is death incarnate he killed two marksmen and a recruit in less time than it took for me to hit the pause button again. Oh yeah hes going to die for this the trouble is doing it in a way to minimize the carnage that is happening. That tantrum started cause he killed the marksdwarf friend infront of him so yeah i might be royally screwed at this point.

It's not a good idea to have a champion or other high military skill dwarf as the captain of the guard because of this exact problem. Find an invalid dwarf or some no-skill, no attribute peasant to do the job. Then the beatings won't be fatal.

If the captain of the guard is a heavily dismembered dwarf who's been confined to a bed for a decade, he won't be getting up to administer beatings. Is there a downside to that?

What an undwarfy destiny.

Confine him to his bed and then flood his chamber with magma and be gone with it.

Or.. Try to wound as many body parts as badly as possible. But don`t let him die! That`s science.

I don't understand the point of even having a captain of the guard, seems they are good for nothing.  I never assign any sheriff or guards and my forts are fine.

I'd sit back and enjoy it actually. Tantrum spirals, unless you have some deep sentimental love for you fort, are a lot of fun to watch. I'd make a jail but leave him as captain of the guard; it'll be exciting for you!

Don't nobles get pissy if people aren't punished when they commit crimes or violate production orders?

Just get Dwarf Companion, turn the troublesome dwarf into a zombie, then a skeleton, then a skeletal zombie, then wonder how a skeleton can be a zombie.

Yes, but the only result of that is that is that they make more mandates and get pissy if those aren't carried out. What are they going to do then, order punishment?

Love that logic, but sometimes nobles become that mandate crazy it really gets annoying (there for most people love burning them to death)

* psychopath

Now, I'm VERY tempted to unlock mister bedridden-for-life's door and assign him captain of the guard instead of the multiple-legendary mayor/broker/brewer.
