Instead, you, the escorts and all of your supplies fall off it. Into a conveniently placed hole.
You crash on to something soft. It's dark. The only supply of light comes from the hole above, which seems to be quite a long distance away.

There is nothing here to build a siege tank out of. Even if you had, you could use some light.
