hmm. Have it as a setting so that you can specify when dwarves go and take their stuff to be mended. If you haven't got the time or effort then you might set your dwarves to take their things for repair at 80%, while a fastidious Spartan fort could force a tune-up after it hits 98%.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Are we going to have to spend a season of every year fixing up armour and weapons?
Probably not, seeing as how most such things as weapon degradation to the point of being unusable does not happen on its own, nor will they all break down at once.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

I would see it working much like melting items*, but the tasks get added automatically at a certain level of degredation. (You could add the tasks manually if you have some downtime.)

* In other words, you designate the equipment to be repaired in the "k" or "v" menu and create a "repair a metal object" task at a forge (or a workshop specially designed for the task). When an item is down to 25% of optimal capacity, these tasks are automatically added. These tasks would take no fuel or raw materials.

On Giant In the Playground and Something Awful I am Gnoman.
Man, ninja'd by a potentially inebriated Lord Shonus. I was gonna say to burn it.
