Liquid pressurization - advanced
« on: July 26, 2009, 03:58:06 am »

Hi all,

I am going to tap into a magma pipe and use a pump to push the magma to my fortress (which will pressurize it).

For both convenience and aesthetics, the pressurized pipe will run under my fortress, below the z-level of the pump. The pipe will then have to rise to 1)power my magma forges and 2)feed a magma pump tower (I intend to cast obsidian walls around my fortress).

I know the magma will rise up to the level of the pump due to the pressure, so the forges will have to be 1 z-level above the pipe's pump:
- higher, magma won't reach
- lower, I'll end up with a magma flood in my forges.

Now for the question:
What layout  should I use to place the pumps of the magma tower so that:
- the tower pumps get magma to suck up
- the tower pumps don't affect the magma pressure in the forges

Another way to put the question is: how can I get at the same time 7/7 magma in the forges and some magma (1/7 to 7/7, doesn't matter) for the tower pumps? (Not the other way around, or the forges won't work).

It's a tricky one...

You will need bauxite for this one

Code: [Select]
        #############
[WORKSHOPS].O.......#
        ###########^#
        ###########^####
   [TOWER].............[FROM MAGMA PIPE]
        ################

# = Wall
. = Floor
O = Pressure Plate (Activates with less than 7 magma)
^ = Pump (Activated by PP)

Put a magma proof floodgate between the forge tunnels and the rest of the system. Fill her up, and close the floodgate.

Use a floodgate for the forges. First fill forges, then close that branch and use the rest. I usually build a central magma reservoir that's pressurized and has many outlets with floodgates hooked up to a set of levers. I dig tunnels to the floodgates as needed.

If I remember correctly, unlike water, magma has no pressure, so magma will never flow up because it is below the pipe.

Pumps can push it back up to the same level as the pump.

Random related question: Can pumps pressurize water to make it flow up, like this?

Quote
       #≈#
      #%#                  Upper level ->     ###
 ###%###                                      #  #
≈%% %%≈                                     ###
###%###
   #%#
  #≈#

# - walls
%% - pumps
≈ - water flow

Also, you can raise magma using a stacked pump system, but you'll need bauxite mechanisms.

Sadly, pumps won't do that (which I think they should).

Awwww chucks, is there any way to make water flow up without using stacked pumps?

Water will flow through a U-bend up to one Z-level below its source. Aside from that, you better get pumpstacking.

However:
W %% W
W %% W
W %% W
W %% W

This drawing will not leak any water. Fortunately pumps are VERY efficient. :)

After the initial pump, you could have the magma for the forges drop one level since magma doesn't have pressure. Easiest way to do it of bauxite is in short supply as it doesn't require any.

Magma will have pressure since I pump it to the forges.

Thanks for the other suggestions - I forgot to mention I don't want to interrupt the magma flow, so no floodgates for me.

I think I found the answer to my question. I had a though about it, and if I use a U bend to separate the forge section of the pipe from the tower, I'll be ok.

The magma will rise to feed the tower if - and only if - the magma is pressurized in the separating U bend, and in turn, it will be pressurized if and only if the magma is at 7/7 in the forges.

I'll try that and report on the result.

Another suggestion: use a second pump for your forges. Since the second pump will cancel the pressure of the first, pumping your magma from the U-bend can be accomplished on any level.

Say you wanted two levels of forges:
Code: [Select]
       ║[Twr]║
[Forge]║~║   ║~%%[To Magma]
~~~~~~%%~║   ║~║
═══════╣~║   ║~║
[Forge]║~║   ║~║
~~~~~~%%~╚═══╝~║
═══════╣~~~~~~~║
       ╚═══════╝
So long as you're happy with an iron pump blocking the exit of your forge magma, everything should be easy. Bonus points if your forge pumps are powered by self-contained perpetual motion waterwheels.

Yea, I'm going to have to do something like this as in my current map the magma pipe is on the other side of the map, on the other side of a chasm....

So, I have two choices, either build my forges all the way over there or channel the magma through somehow.

Oh yea, I'm in a desert and even though there is a bit of savannah on the northern and southern edges, there are nasties crawling all over. So, wood is in short supply, heh.

Once I deal with the fey mood forgeworker (I'm not sure if the fey mood is armorsmithing or metalcrafting as the guy has both at the same level), I'll try and deal with the magma forge issue. Even if I have to send peasants to their deaths and fight off some of the nasties. Hopefully the human caravan comes, I have no idea why they take years to appear....

Edit: Actually, I'm thinking that I mainly only need to transport the magma to where I need it and perhaps use diagonal pathways to depressurize it or use the chasm to my advantage to bleed off any excess as a result of pressurization.
