Can skeleton men pass through fortifications?
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:12:43 pm »

I dug a giant reservoir next to a cave river, connected it to the cave river through fortifications. Next I know, I have two war dogs living in the reservoir fighting skeleton frogmen and snakemen.

Underground water creatures have a hard time respecting fortifications. Some people think they get pushed through them, while I believe that they freely path through them, and I will continue to make this assertion.

The unfortunate result of both cases is that you end up needing to fight lizardmen and frogmen and cave crocodiles when you shouldn't need to.

If there's flowing water (and perhaps magma, I'm not sure on that one) involved, then there's always the possibility that something can get "pushed" (or whichever explanation you prefer) through things.  Grates, definitely.  Plan accordingly.

But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

If they're skeletal, wouldn't they just destroy the grate?

I'm not sure if fortifications can keep everything out.

I had a Fire Man slip through a fortification leading from a magma pipe, no idea how.  I'm certain it wasn't pushed.

I believe they DO get pushed, because I've never, ever had a magma creature end up in my fortress after I've filled a certain tunnel with magma, whereas I've ended up with some tourist imps a few times during the initial flooding. I've also never had a creature which was on a different zlvl than the fortification end up in my goblin pool.

I agree with that: creatures can get pushed through obstacles on the same z-level by flowing liquids (fortifications, grates, and bars).
They will NOT get pushed, however, between z-levels separated grates and bars. Fortifications do not apply between different z-levels, obviously.

Yes. I found that the hard way with zombie fire imps and magma.

Those do NOT pass through fortifications, through

Does anyone know if making a double layer of fortifications helps?

I make Grimlocke's History & Realism Mods. Its got poleaxes, sturdy joints and bloomeries. Now compatible with DF Revised!

I had cave crocodiles and a large assortment of other water creatures walk through three fortifications.

I had multiple carps moving freely from a streem through 4 Fortifications as if they were just open space. So wouldnt be surprised if this is possible with everything underwater.
By the way so far I have never seen a fire imp move through Fortifications filtering the magma.

Considering that constructed fortifications are just about half a square tall by appearances (seeing as how they appear as an open space on the level above), why wouldn't things path over them? A stack of 7 water or magma ought to be twice as tall as your average fortification and any creature ought to be able to jump, swim, climb or crawl over it.

Now, carved fortifications, that ought to be a different story as those should be connected to the rock above them (unless it's channelled out), but constructed fortifications shouldn't stop anything from just passing over them.
