Never mind--went and looked it up again.  Mafia indeed started with the Mafia-theme in Russia.  So, DarthCloakedDwarf, we're playing the evolved predecessor of the game you mentioned.

Let's say the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees is proconsul (the original mafia game).  Chimpanzees are more like proconsul than are humans, but neither is proconsul.  Thus we can call chimps the "evolved predecessor" to humans, i.e. the original Mafia game evolved into what we play now, but can still be considered a predecessor to Werewolf.

Doesn't matter too much, except in that Werewolf tends to have one member of the scumteam perform all kills while they're alive.
