What about Muskox leather?

If you have plenty of raw glass and everything else as you say, I have no idea what the problem could be

Well hell, I don't have Musk Ox leather. Thankfully its late spring and the human caravan should have some leather, but if I don't am I just boned?

Is there anyway to pull him out of this without sending him to tantrum or melancholy?

Unfortunately, you can only pass or fail with these moods. Failures result in any of three forms of insanity, melacholy (like depression I guess, and the dwarf moves slowly), raving mad (scrambled eggs for brains insane), and beserk.... which is self descriptive.

So, no, there isn't any way out of this.

You said you had one silk cloth left, is that one being used by the moody dwarf or not? Given your overabundance of leather (and it should be 'prefers dog leather' instead of dogs. I had a noble that got ten dwarves executed because I didn't have any shark leather for her.

I would bet that it's silk problem you're having.

A quick scan of the stocks menu shows that one of the dead pack animals has a bin full of silk cloth!  It is speedily unforbidden, and my moody glassmaker sprints off to retrieve his prize amongst the smoking, charred, blood-soaked ruin that is the outdoors, totally oblivious to the carnage that was instigated on his behalf.

Like I said in an earlier post he already has spider silk cloth in his shop, and I have one left in my stockpile.

You may need more silk cloth. One piece might not be enough. The maximum any mood will ever need for any one material is three items, though. Something to keep in mind the next mood.

Are you listing them in order? What comes right before tanned hides? That'll be the one he's stuck on.

I've started embarking with a little less food and anvils, only one axe, and bringing some extra goods, like wood and silk cloth, exactly to keep this from happening before my fort's got goods to trade for the GCS silk.

And I used to think that Moods wanted to use their preferred materials, but really?

They want the most expensive thing available. This is good and bad, because they'll wind up giving your fortress a massive value booth, which has ups and downs.

Fortunately, Glassmakers can easily be trained as long as you have sand and magma. And you also get raw green glass, which can be used to train jewelers.

Duly noted.

Right before tanned hides he requests silk cloth.

I already know all this... I just didn't think that the silk thing would happen to me ya know? So I didn't bother to get GCS these last four years.

I know its easy to train glass makers but dammit he was Skilled. I had him on 24/7 raw glass duty and with my legendary gem cutter he was boosting my fortress value more than my engravers. Ah well.

Okay, NEW problem. Glassy's got everything he needs but is just sitting in his workshop.

He needs:
Silk cloth
Tanned hides
Raw green glass
Plant fiber cloth
Bones

Make sure you have at least 3 of all of these items that are not being used or currently tasked. I know you said you have plenty of everything else, but I wanted to be sure. Also, just for kicks make a green glass block or two if you don't have any.
