kills give experience because you hit things to kill them, and hitting things gives experience.

The warhammer, blunt damage and the second highest damaging weapon in the game. Also has knock back. Just equipt your guys with full plate and sheilds, train them up in wrestling, armour using and sheild using and them give them weapons.

The problem, though, is that it'll take them half a month to grab their weapon and get their armor on. They'll get picked off one by one while raiding the stockpiles. I think he's looking for a weapon he can leave a pile of at the front gate, draft the fortress, and have them grab something on they way out to the battlefield. And if he trains them up, he loses all of his laborers.

The dwarven AK47?

Wrestling. Trains quickly, makes them effective, but not really the best out there, and gives absolutely no protection against incoming fire.

Actually, killing things gives experience. Out of my two newbie wrestlers, one got an entire goblin thief to himself and made champion ahead of the other guy.

That's because before he broke the goblin's neck, he put him in about a dozen choke holds, arm bars, leg locks, and other grappling moves. I'm still not convinced killing gives exp, killing gives the chance for more attacks that grant exp.

But seriously, just train your laborers. You don't need to draft all 40 at once, send them in groups of six or so to wrestle for a season, then switch. After they're done practicing wrestling, arm them and spend another season practicing the axe or the hammer. You'll never be low on labor, and as a bonus if one of your haulers randomly runs into a kobold thief while hauling something inside you can draft him and he should kill it with no trouble at all unarmed.

Here's your AK47.

Code: [Select]
[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_AK47]

[DAMAGE:60:SLASH]
[WEIGHT:60]
[SKILL:COMEDY]
[RANGED:COMEDY:BOLT]
[TWO_HANDED:0]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:5]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]

Why not just use a bunch of crossbows? Get enough bolts flying in the air and something's gonna hit something.

No risk in training, either, especially if there's lots of wildlife... Something funny about seeing several recruits turn into marksdwarves after fending off some 20 thieving monkeys. You also don't end up with naked dwarves and a barracks full of clothing.

Actually, wardogs are a crew-served weapon. I tried putting them in a cage, and it took half a year to cram all of them back in again afterwards.
And they didn't help much with the goblin siege.

Wrestling trains dodge, so wrestling would be a better defensive training than any other weapon skill bar ranged weapons.

Sure, wrestling trains quickly, but the idea of the AK-47 wasn't to train quickly, but to mass produce and distribute to the commoners as they head out to fight the enemies. Obsidan short swords are cheap and quick to mass produce, and as someone here pointed out, very sharp and effective so I feel they are the 'Dwarven AK-47'

If their effectiveness while sparring is any indication; obsidian swords are cheap and equipping a recruit with two of them turns them into a goblin shredder for a short time.  For less wear, equip one sword and a shield, as they live a little longer.

If you want to *train* swordsdwarves, I recommend training them to *no adjective* wrestler level, and give them a sword and board.
