Great first impressions.
« on: July 24, 2009, 05:32:58 pm »

So I am asking about any sites that gave you guys great first impressions, as in on the embark screen and before you started to dig in.

Here is mine:
Embark screen: every feature other than a magma pool, good start!
When I got there: 2 magnetite clusters, 1 hematite vein, 1 aluminum vein, 1 gold vein, and 3 bauxite clusters! No way for the exposed magma and chasm critters to get me. Nice. 8)

There is a magma pool there?I am ashamed of all those who fell with the waves of people who love magma.

What kind of dwarf doesn't love magma?
They love rocks,
they love crazy things.
Magma is just crazy molten rock. All we need now is to find a way to make it alcoholic and drinkable.
Back on topic;
Had one that had HFS, magma pipe, lotsa trees and a river.
Started, failing to realise that it was haunted biome.
My dwarves either burnt, drowned, or were mauled to death by skeletal fish.

I found a haunted jungle that was nestled in a mountain pass. On one side of the mountain were several human civilizations. On the other, a few dark fortresses, but otherwise half a continent of unsettled land. I thought that would be a cool place to settle, for narrative reasons.

It also had magma. And phantom spider silk. And foul blendecs. And werewolves.

That was a fun map.

@Phantom;
Everyone who plays DF is, at heart, an ale-swilling, magma-utilising, psychotic, genocidal dwarf.
Otherwise, why would you play a game that allows you to do such things? :D

@Groovester;
Jungles are usually fun on their own, but with haunted biome as well, that's just over the top. Even by dwarf standards :)
Oh, and narrative/things-that-aren't-really-that-important reasons are easily the best reason for choosing an embark location ^^

My current map has magma, 3 tons of bauxite, and aluminum  :)

Along with sand, tons of trees, a brook, and wild cougars I am attempting to catch.

mwhehe. playing on any map with migrating curious creatures is fun (not Fun, though that as well). You build basic cage traps and then they storm the fortress trying to steal your precious good, whereupon you cage a good half a dozen of them and reset the cages for the next season. Stupid jumping lizards, I have far too many of them now.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Err, sire, I don't drinks.

Well, I do drink red liquids though.

And the reason I play DF is because I could read the legend.

Embarked on high cliffs with a brook and a chasm.

Upon my first overview of the site, saw exposed hematite, aluminium, and lovely, lovely olivine! Ooooh, future megaproject, you will be dark green and gorgeous.

And then I saw the waterfall....

This holds true for this game as well.

Thanks for that...  now I have the image of Urist McBooger walking up to me with a creepy smile and asking me if I want a "dwarven shower".

Had a map with a dolomite layer, magma, and as I was digging out my storage space I hit hematite. As I was channeling to the magma, I struck magnetite. I dug due west from the first magnetite vein and hit a second one.

I gave up on the map though, the exposed magma pipe critters kept lighting the world on fire. I hate that, not really fun just annoying.
