Halp, my volume control is broken.
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:02:21 pm »

I don't know what happened.  I think I may have gotten some kind of virus or something because I wasn't very careful with ActiveX permissions, but anyway, the master volume on my computer is at 100 and goes right back up if you try to turn it down.  I've tried everything, I restarted, did a system restore to before it happened, virus scanned my whole computer, uploaded the associated dlls to Jotti's scan thing, checked the Micrososft site, no luck at all.

Uninstalling Firefox worked for a few hours, but it was back this morning.  I've tried googling it but I couldn't find anything related to my problem.  Has anyone had this before or knows something I can do to fix it?  Right now I have it partially dealt with by using Vista's controls for individual programs(The problem only affects the master volume), but I'd like something more permanent.

Give me thine aid, Bay12Forum!

Well... sometimes the answers can be really funny, obvious and stupid... have you checked for a possible short-circuit on any possibly existing volume control buttons on your keyboard? or maybe it's just stuck.

Either way. Unplug the keyboard, turn the volume down and see what happens.

That way you can rule out everything keyboard-related.

It's a laptop.

EDIT:  I think you had it anyway.  I use a "Wireless" mouse and keyboard on my desktop("Wireless" because there is a wire, it's just not connected to themouse and keyboard and the sensor is so weak you have to have it right next to the mouse and keyboard or it acts up).

I was using the mouse on my laptop because I don't like the touchpad, and it suddenly occurred to me that the keyboard was also plugged in through the same USB cable and there was a stack of papers on it.  I moved the papers and it's good now.

I'll keep this up for a few minutes in case it comes back, then I'll lock it.

Well, that seems to have been the problem.
