The foremost mechanic is hitting things with bullets (or lasers, or rockets, or squid) and not letting them hit you with bullets (or lasers, or rockets, or squid).

Therefore it is a shooter. There are RPG elements, yes.

That doesn't define something as a shooter. I can dodge arrows in some roguelikes, and in games such as Triangle Wizard. Is Triangle Wizard a shooter? Spells are like ammo, etc.

It's really simple.  In a roleplaying game, low level actions like hitting a target are resolved by character skill rather than player skill.  That's the essence of role playing another character.  It's their actions, no yours, that determine how the world reacts.

I thought a shooter was 'defined' by shooting things? Namely, guns.

By definition of hitting something using a roll of the dice, or the skills of a character, then if there's a single skill you can raise which raise damage.... that takes things out of the hands of the player. You define an RPG as a turnbased system solely, as dice rolling has never worked reasonably in a realtime system.

I wish the characters were different though.  They did the same thing they did in Left 4 Dead, not giving me a normal looking average-built white person to play as.  Meh, I'll probably end up playing as Roland most of the time.

I wonder how character progression is going to work since there are four preset characters.  Will you pick a character at the beginning of a multiplayer session and it'll save that character for other sessions, but if you play another session later as a different character you'll be at level 1?

Or will all the characters be saved as one?  That doesn't seem likely.

Well two years back they said that you can play as any combination of the characters.

Allowing you to have four Rolands.

They could give all your characters the same XP and let you spec them differently, like in KOTOR.

I think you can make any number of characters.

These are all persistent and you can play with each in multiplayer and singleplayer.

Think of the characters as classes.

Huh, I didn't think of that.  I must've been hung-up on the Left 4 Dead parallels instead of the Diablo parallels.

It's a shooter! It's an RPG! It's both!

Yeah, but Borderlands has the advantage of looking nice and being good.

((I actually liked Fallout 3, but the problems were still apparent))

Fallout 3 was fun, but transistioning from 3rd person iso to 1st person direct was a terrible decision in making it authentic. My level 17 always had fun tho, 100 in small guns meant a 10mm pistol was even more deadly.
