Gears of War was usually pretty good about this... Giant Monsters AND most things died in a reasonable number of shots...  (I'm ignoring the final boss here, he's probably the tropenamer...)

The final boss in Gears of War 2 was pathetic.  I kept waiting for something crazy to happen or for it to come after them, but it was just dead, and lame.

Also, they're showing off DLC before the game's even out?  Is the DLC going to be free?

Well the game is already Gold so they are working on the future content now. They gotta keep their boys employed after all. Mind the DLC content they've shown off is something that wouldn't possibly fit in the game setting they've designed, it's like a whole separate stage

Why not? Having more content immediately after launch seems pretty normal these days, and the game is out in a few days.

I rather think a while ago most of this extra content either 1> would have been made just by fans. 2> would have been made as a full-price expansion pack or 3> not exist. Depending on the game and developer of course.

So now instead of spending thirty dollars on a full expansion you spend fifty dollars in five dollar increments on stuff that doesn't even add up to the level of an expansion pack.  The kind of stuff that most DLC is made of would have been released for free if at all a few years ago.  The other problem is of course that these days most mainstream games on PC are Console Ports which usually means user made content isn't an option. Then there's this trend of releasing games with content missing in order to sell it later as DLC.  E.G. Oblivion's Imperial Orrery.
