As long as you're modding anyway, you could always modify a smelter reaction to produce ammo for you out of some sustainable material like stone, and then shoot at the orcs from a high place (if you have one).

If they're standard orcs I believe they have TRAPAVOID, but if that's been taken out you could always build some mechanisms and stone-fall traps, lock up your dwarves, then let the suckers in.

I've got a custom reaction to let me prospect any metal from any stone. Its not nearly as efficient as the actual ore however, but if I've got 10,000 stones laying around, its good enough.
