Do sieges end on their own?
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:32:10 pm »

I'm under siege by orcs, and i have no weapons to fight them but their locked out, will they go away on their own or will my people become isolated and have to survive off the under ground river i found?

I think I recall hearing they will eventually get bored(1 year?) and go away but I can not say that with conviction because I can't find it after a quick scan of the wiki.

If it were goblins it wouldn't be that big a deal, just a little trouble to setup a haul of death for them.  With Orcs* it may require time, clever cultivation and use of the tower caps you are about to start seeing but it is possible to break out of such a situation.

Sieges usually end before the season is over, or soon after the season ends.

I would like to point out that this is not DF 3.0, but DF 0.3.

Wellll...The short answer is I don't really know, but I'm leaning toward probably not.

The long answer is that I've never been in your particular situation, but during one seige I wanted to try to get all of the attackers in traps without any risk of dwarven injury whatsoever. When I locked all the dwarves in, put up all the gates, and hunkered down to wait for them to enter my many traps (near the fortress), the goblin attackers simply milled about, seemingly without any real purpose, as though they couldn't find the place. As an experiment, I put down the gates and the goblins swarmed toward the fortress immediately. But upon once again closing the gates they stopped, hung out, and apparently had picnics.

Needless to say, I got pretty bored with that, and just sent the military out and killed them. I understand you're not in a position to do such a thing. What kind of defenses do you have?

If you find out that you can wait them out, though, I'd love to know! Good luck.

I had a human siege wait through the whole autumn just to make sure I wasn't going anywhere. It was about mid-winter when the bowmen squad left and I could safely send out my miners to hollow out their chests.

If you want to be able to trade during a siege, set up an airlock with two drawbridges. Just stick the trade depot between them.

Caravans don't arrive when you're besieged. That's one of the reasons you need to get rid of sieges, not because you need the caravan's supplies, but because you need to get rid of all your junk.

Regular goblin sieges get bored and leave eventually, that is mostly because I make my fortress self sufficient.
The only thing I use the caravans for is to buy steel stuff and/or flux material (Since I always start in an Obsidian covered non-flux map).
Would love a map that has loads of natural Obsidian, Flux and magma pipe.

Well I'm going to make a military from the guy's I've got, The only reason i locked my self i was because my dining hall project was a pain, and its almost complete. I generally don't like using traps because i can become invisible with them and no they don't have trap avoid, I took that out so i may make arenas with orcs.

Shortest siege left untended(not brutally murdered) lasted about a season for me.

Longest, the jerks hanged around the edge of the map for about a year.
This can be very very bad depending your fort's ability to produce food and drinks.

If you can arrange the death of just one of the siegers, it might pursuade them to turn tail and flee.

I was trying to coax one into my fort and they encountered a tethered elephant of mine (guarding my previous and less viscious entrance), lost one of their mob (not sure if it was their leader, or not, I didn't think to check) and then ran off my territory like scared sheep (taking all my loottheir equipment with them, which was dissapointing).

And, now I think about it, the siege might well have been the reason the Human caravan didn't arrive that year.  Though I received the human diplomat and the dwarven caravan and diplomat (the latter being a goblin!) in the autumn.  I actually took a screenshot of that, for posteriry, but it's at home...  But I didn't pay attention to what the human diplomat said to me (no trade deal info, just speach) due to that awkward way in which the conversation can occur while in a 'paused' screen, like when rearranging the jobs at a workshop or whatever, and thus I was far too eager/keyboard-happy to get back to the interupted task at hand.

What climate are you in?

If you're in a comfortable climate, goblins will stick around for up to a year.

However if you embark on a glacier they really don't like sticking around for very long. Eventually they will begin to freeze to death when outside, and this very much discourages them from sticking around for longer than a month.

In a comfortable climate, I've had goblins leave in the same season (trying to lure them into a sweet killing zone didn't work, they got bored).

I've also had the last half-squad from a huge goblin siege stick around forever at the edge in their starting spots forever until I sent out someone to kill them.
