When embarking in a haunted biome with a magma pipe, remember that undead fire imps and magma men CAN destroy grates.

That's why you should always use fortifications?

Just for the record: making a magma channel only accesible via the tiles the workshops need to function and then putting the workshops there keeps EVERYTHING out, right? Hostile creatures only destroy buildings on the same z level, right?

Ahh, undead fire imps are only marginally less wimpy than normal fire imps. And magma men still can't swim, last I checked, so they're a non-threat. Fire men can be quite dangerous though.

You don't make EXTREME MAGMA FORGES made in the UNDEAD BOWELS OF THE EARTH.

Also, I generally try to make my forges look like an artificial cave with a magma pool that the forges are built around.

I always try to build my magma workshops with an impassable tile over the magma hole.  I don't know that this actually keeps the imps out, but it makes me FEEL safe, and that's what really matters.  On that topic, funny story:  Got a message, "Sneezy cancels forge steel war hammer, interrupted by fire imp," so I hit the space bar and head over there to set a military waypoint, and the imp's got a blue background, flying through the air into the metal bar stockpile.  Apparently Sneezy was so startled by the imp popping up that he clobbered it into next week.  It died on impact and was carted away and converted into chipotle steaks.

This was what I was expecting.

Undead. Magma. Creatures.

WHAT THE FUCK?!?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Personally I always use Fortifications to filter magma taken from the pipe.
I would love a nice Haunted obsidian rich area with a magma pipe...
BTW is it normal or am I the only one who gets skelly carp/sturgeon flying in the air outside the stream in a Hot haunted map?
