Blood on Walls and Floors Mysteriously Vanishing
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:46:12 pm »

I've been noticing in a recent fortress that whenever a kobold thief gets killed in my fort, the blood on the walls and floor will vanish after someone walks through the corridor. Now, I'm using a modded-in race that has a blood-drain attack (wanted to see what it did). Would t just be my dudes drinking the blood? If not, this would likely be a glitch. If they CAN do  that, then my dudes are just being awesome.

Idle dwarves with the Cleaning labor enabled (by default, all of them) will periodically take it upon themselves to clean gunk off the walls.  If you manage to catch one of them walking through, 'v' over him and you should see his job marked as "cleaning."

Also, stains all disappear when the season changes, so that could be the cause.

Ah, must be the cleaning then. Can't be the seasons, since it happens nigh instantaneously after the kobold is killed, and one of them goes up to the spot where the corpse fell right when the blood poofs away. Industrious little buggers.

Dwarves have a special nose like a dog's.

When they smell some sort of blood, water, or vomit, they instantly know the exact spot and coordinates, and rushes their way to clean it, despite filling a mandate, mining through a aquifer or magma, or even while fighting goblins.

Underground tiles can be cleaned by dwarves with the cleaning labor.

Above ground tiles will not be cleaned, but instead will clean themselves with the change of every season.

Cleaning will also clear away molten rock if it's not covered by magma at the moment. Or molten metal, for that matter...

Also spilled booze and water.

I wish it wouldn't do that. I want my barracks stained with bloodand my walls to be caked in the vomit and blood of my foes.

P.S. Why don't goblins void their bowels when they die?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Turn off the cleaning labour on every dwarf, then, and indoor stains should persist :)
Outdoor ones will still disappear on season change.

I think the indoor ones disappear on season change too.

Well, they'll at least last longer if nobody's scrubbing them off. What I don't get is why dwarves are so fastidious about the fortress but will walk around caked in vomit-crusted rags. Maybe it says something about their cultural priorities.

Well, the game is "Dwarf Fortress". The dwarves are just an adjective here; it's the fortress that counts.
