Caged hostile dwarves; what to do with them?
« on: July 22, 2009, 04:34:45 pm »

Goblins invaded me.  Among them were two dwarves, which fell into cage traps.

I can't pit them into my dwarven Slap Chop.

I can't ballista-arrow their cages.

I don't have any river handy to drown them.

I can't convince a marksdwarf to shoot into the cage.

How the hell am I supposed to kill those bastards?  I want to safeguard the cage too.

You could always release them.

Strip the prisoners of their weapons and armor (dump their equipment, ideally using d-b-d, preferably with a garbage dump zone nearby), build the cages in a convenient location (for example, a shallow pit from which they cannot escape), connect them to a lever, then station your military nearby and pull the lever. Without their weapons and armor they'll be defenseless, but be aware that your dwarves will insist on burying them in one of your coffins (they are dwarves, after all).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

i.e., treat them pretty much like any enemy you catch in a cage.

Goblins are child snatchers - so they often show up with grown soldiers of other races.  Little diff from gobbos, and they can't be "re-educated" back into being productive dwarves. Slag 'em.

Order the cage dumped into magma.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

That would cause the dwarf to be instantly returned to the location where he was captured in the cage trap. Except he would be on fire, and he would set fire to anything flammable nearby.

I think he's planning on using a cage trap near a pressure plate with a charcoal stockpile surrounding the two such that when the pressure plate is activated a cage containing a goblin captured by that cage trap will drop into the magma which will return the goblin to the location of the original cage trap albeit on fire who will then light the charcoal that will cause a chain reaction on all the other charcoal present that will then proceed to incinerate any passing goblins.

That's what I thought of when Shurikane said booby trap. And something else, too.

tie them into dwarven rum barrel and shoot them into magma, see what happens and profit.
                                 ....OR....
build massive arena where is tamed dragon and release all your caged enemies at once and take a cup of coffee

Replace the charcoal with booze and you're onto something...

Charcoal burns longer than booze.

And flaming booze doesn't hurt anyone, reportedly. I've never tested it myself.

It's unclear if all fire is not the same, or if it's just very random in its danger to dwarves.

I played with a savescum of butchering a fire imp, seeing the fat do its thing - sometimes it was a huge explosion (5 tiles out), sometimes just a burp - no clear pattern or predictable danger level.
